Coach Small enters his seventh season as the leader of the Vanguard basketball program. During his first six seasons Coach Small has never had a losing record in the district, and never finished lower than third in the league all while competing in one of the toughest districts in the state. In the past 10 seasons, Vanguard’s district has sent 7 teams to the Final Four, produced 3 State Champions and 2 State Runner Ups. The basketball program has improved every season at all three levels since Coach Small’s arrival, winning 32, 37, 41, 44, 51, & 51 games respectively. The Knights are 89-66 overall and 35-23 in district play, and 55-20 vs. Marion County Teams under Coach Small. In 2014, the Knights finished 9th in the State on the Court, and 5th in the state Academically. The 2015 Vanguard Team followed up with a #17 final ranking, and 12th Academically. Both teams won the MCIAC County Championship. Under Coach Small, Vanguard has won over 70% of their games the past three seasons, and have gone to the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time since the 2003 and 2004 campaigns. Coach Small’s players have earned 15 Marion County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (MCIAC) All-Conference Team selections, 22 MCIAC All-Academic Team selections, 1 Ocala Star Banner Player of the Year (2015-Myron Hagins), 3 Star Banner First-Team All-Area selections, 3 Second-Team and 2 Third-Team, 3 FABC Third-Team All-State selections, and 22 of 27 seniors have gone on to enroll in college. Coach Small was voted FACA District Coach of the Year in 2013, 2014, & 2015. Prior to arriving at Vanguard, Coach Small spent three years as an assistant at Leesburg High School while also coaching the Freshman and JV teams. He also served as an assistant with the Leesburg Girls Basketball Program going to back-to back Final Fours in 2007 and 2008. He attended the University of Kansas where he was a student volunteer in the Athletic Department and Men’s Basketball Program. Coach Small spent one year after college in Phoenix, AZ doing sports marketing and event planning for the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and Insight Bowl NCAA College Football Bowl Games. Away from the court, you can usually find Coach Small on a golf course or watching his Kansas Jayhawks.
